MBW Goal The goal of MBW is NOT to tutor you so that you can survive an upcoming examination. The goal of MBW is to be your trainer/mentor until you become self-sufficient in Mathematics so we’ll just be friends. My desire is for you to like Mathematics and get A’s, not just to survive it! Yes hard work is involved, but I’ve been there done that. Know that I’ll be there with you along your journey to success. Let’s talk … : Terry@MathematicsByWilson.com PS: I have the credentials, experience, and care/concern needed for your journey. |

Mathematics Anxiety I do not know if I ever personally ever had what is currently called Mathematics Anxiety but I “hated” Mathematics until the twelfth grade. Then enter Mr. Johnson – an organized teacher who definitely knew the mathematical he taught, knew what we needed to do to reduce/eliminate mathematical deficiencies, provided appropriate assignments so we could actually understand the material, always answered our questions/concerns, loved Mathematics, and cared about student’s learning. WOW! He provided a firm foundation for me on which to build my “teaching career”. Let me now comment on my strategy to learn and maybe ever master Mathematics: 1. My Entrance Examination: 1 + 1 = ? If your answer is NOT “2”, I doubt I can help you but let’s talk. If your answer is “2”, you have shown that you can do Mathematics. BUT if you do NOT believe that you can because someone has told you or is telling you that you cannot do Mathematics, do NOT believe them. Talk to me! In my case, I proved them wrong and you can too! Now, if you don’t want to do it or just won’t do it, that’s a different story. Honestly, there is not much I can do in this situation but let’s at least talk about it. 2. Hopefully, you have made it to this step which is threefold: a. Present: What course do you want/need to master? b. Past: Do you have the mathematical background that this course requires? If so, great! If not, we’ll get a plan to remedy the deficiencies! c. Future: What are the remaining courses you need to master? Have you selected a college degree to work toward? If so, what is it? 3. No matter if we need to start with past deficiencies or current requirements, the starting place is with appropriate FUNdamental Facts (FF). Mathematics is built upon FF. We’ll make a list AND assign a code (for example, “E05”) to each of them but will not prove them! However, we will familiarize ourselves with them by verifying they are valid for carefully selected sets of numbers. As appropriate, we’ll make use of a calculator showing that the left hand side of the fact equals the right hand side. Besides helping us learn the FF, this exercise will increase our proficiency with calculator technology. There is a time and place for calculators. Sometimes we will even use graphing technology to illustrate the FF. 4. We always use these facts proceeding from the original problem through to the solution by placing a code above each equal sign we include in the solution process until we are proficient in using these FF. 5. Notice that we are driven by the process and are NOT just answer driven. When we get our solution, we verify it. Actually, doing this helps us understand the process. 6. There are a lot of other things to say and do but this will get you started on your journey to success in Mathematics. 7. The goal of a Calculus course is to provide knowledge and understanding. MBW provides the wisdom – reasoning skills and some whys – to be successful on the AP Calculus Examinations. This section will contain a “completely worked out” AP Calculus Examination with videos |
